The College has established five new service awards and several special events to honor staff who exemplify Dartmouth’s commitment to excellence and core values, President Philip J. Hanlon ’77 announced today.

Called the Lone Pine Employee Recognition Program, the initiative will serve as the new home of the Sheila Culbert Distinguished Employee Award, the College’s highest staff honor, and will include the new staff awards, each with a monetary prize, for individuals and teams in the following categories: collaboration; passion and commitment; innovation; leadership; and unsung hero.

“This comprehensive program aims to foster a deeper culture of appreciation across campus by recognizing the efforts of our colleagues, promoting teamwork, and acknowledging the value of diversity and inclusion,” President Hanlon says. “The success of the College depends on every member of our community, and I’m pleased that we are expanding the ways in which we honor staff who excel at their jobs and model the core values of the College.”

Nominations for the awards will be accepted beginning Nov. 1, with winners to be recognized at a new event to be held in April, which will be separate from the annual Service Awards dinner in December. Details on the Lone Pine program are available on the Human Resources website.

“We cannot overestimate the importance of staff to our educational mission and the success of the entire Dartmouth community,” says Gail Gentes, a member of the cross-campus working group that helped design the program.

“It is important to recognize the work of outstanding employees who contribute so much to the vibrancy of the College and, at the same time, empower employees to recognize one another,” says Gentes, who is married to Hanlon.

The Lone Pine program also establishes “gratitude baskets,” which will be placed in locations across campus and filled with a variety of cards for employees to use as a quick way to recognize and thank their colleagues for a job well done. The cards can be from students, faculty, or staff to other staff members and can be delivered directly to a peer or sent via Hinman Mail.

Other components of the program include an annual summer social employee appreciation event on the Green each June, and regular staff profile stories to be featured on the Dartmouth News site.

Members of the employee recognition working group are Sarah Brooks, Office of the Provost; Chris Cook, Thayer School of Engineering; Tye Deines, Tuck School of Business; Julie Findley, Campus Services; Gail Gentes, Office of the President; Faith Goodness, Geisel School of Medicine; Sadhana Hall, Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Public Policy; Traci Ladue, Information, Technology and Consulting; Ann Malenka, Advancement; Courtney Rotchford, Wellness at Dartmouth; Michelle Scichilone, Office of Human Resources; Amanda Skinner, Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies; Kate Soule, Dean of the Faculty Office; Jennifer Taxman, Dartmouth Library.

Also participating were Emily Eckels, who has retired from Student Affairs; Maggie Kennedy, formerly of Wellness at Dartmouth, who has left the College; and Dana Metes, who had been working in athletics and has moved to the Dartmouth College Fund.
