“Witness to History: James Nachtwey — Afghanistan, Ground Zero, Iraq,” a new show of photographs at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, includes images the renowned photojournalist and alumnus took in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, reports the Valley News.

Among them are “a number of photographs of the firefighters of 9/11, some of whom are searching for survivors in a blast of twisted metal, some of whom have perished. He seems to feel a particular affinity for them. Like Nachtwey, they put themselves in harm’s way, rushing toward situations from which most of us would instinctively flee,” writes the newspaper.

“What follows in the exhibition, which runs through Dec. 14, is a series of 25 photographs that show us what preceded that Tuesday in September, and what came afterward.”

There are also “photographs that Nachtwey took during the civil war in Afghanistan in the 1990s, as the Taliban were fighting for control of the country, and there are photographs from the American invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. He also has devoted time to documenting the road back home for American veterans grievously wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan,” the Valley News writes.
