As a guest on CNN’s Amanpour, Dartmouth’s Daniel Benjamin speaks with host Fred Pleitgen about the possibility of the Islamic State evolving into a true state.

“I think that as a long-term proposition it’s quite dubious that ISIS, that the Islamic State, will evolve into a state,” says Benjamin, the Norman E. McCulloch Jr. Director of the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding. “First of all, at the very heart of its ideology is expansion, and that means, in this case, either war or terrorism. And I don’t believe that either its neighbors or the wider world are going to tolerate that.”
