African director Abderrahmane Sissako will receive the Dartmouth Film Award in an April 21 presentation that will follow the screening of his most recent movie, Timbuktu, in Loew Auditorium at the Black Familu Visual Arts Center, reports the Valley News.

The presentation comes at the end of Sissako’s three-day visit to the campus, reports the newspaper. Timbuktu, which is set in Mali, is a “superbly acted, beautiful film, which might seem a strange word to use about a movie that depicts life under the rule of Islamic militants,” the newspaper writes. “It doesn’t flinch from showing, or implying, its atrocities, although it does so in a measured way.”
