Computer science major Kaya Thomas ’17 is one of three young educators recently honored by first lady Michelle Obama for their education advocacy.

"It was probably one of the most spectacular nights of my entire life," Thomas tells SILive.com, which notes that Tony- and Emmy-winning actress Cicely Tyson; filmmaker Ava DuVernay (Selma); Helene D. Gayle, president and CEO of CARE USA; singer Erykah Badu; educator and education advocate Nadia Lopez; and actress Jada Pinkett Smith were also honored at the ceremony. The event was taped and can be seen on BET’s Black Girls Rock! show at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 5.

In addition to her education advocacy, which includes online coding tutorials, Thomas was honored for creating the iPhone app "We Read Too."

The app is a “compilation/directory of books written by people of color for young readers. It's the go-to for readers looking for diversity in literature,” reports SILive.com.
