In a story about the “muddling” effect Japan’s push to control portrayals of its wartime past may have on the country’s current massive public relations effort to win allies abroad, Reuters turns for comment to Jennifer Lind, an associate professor of government.

“Dragging people into a long discussion about history ... seems like they are going to brand Japan with that atrocity in terms of its image. It’s a losing battle,” says Lind, the author of Sorry States: Apologies in International Politics (Cornell, 2008).
