Jerry Jasinowski begins his Huffington Post blog by pointing to new research by the Tuck School of Business’ Andrew Bernard and Teresa Fort about the way the Bureau of Labor Statistics counts manufacturing jobs in the United States.
In their paper, Bernard, the Jack Byrne Professor of International Economics, and Fort, an assistant professor of business administration, “contend that many manufacturing companies are not included as such because they do not actually own and manage manufacturing plants where their products are made,” writes Jasinowski. “They suggest, credibly in my opinion, that a company that designs and coordinates the manufacturing of goods is a manufacturer, with or without a factory, and that its employees should be counted as manufacturing employees.”
