Methlisothiazolinone, a preservative that can be found in makeup, sunscreens, moisturizers, and shampoos, was named the “allergen of the year” by the American Contact Dermatitis Society, reports Prevention magazine.

An increasing number of allergic reactions to the preservative are being reported, notes the article. “Methlisothiazolinone has recently been introduced to cosmetics and toiletries, and the use of it increased dramatically in the past few years,” the Geisel School of Medicine’s Kathryn Zug tells Prevention. “Even companies I’ve recommended based on less frequent use of allergens have started using the ingredient, which I find concerning.”
