In an opinion piece about April Fools’ Day pranks, Dartmouth’s Colleen Glenney Boggs writes that the importance of the tradition of fooling our friends and acquaintances lies in the annual repetition.

“April Fools’ jokes are as much a surprise as they are a ritual,” writes Boggs, associate professor of English and women’s and gender studies and director of the Leslie Center for the Humanities. “We consent to the surprising pleasures of repetition. Everybody knows to be careful on April 1, and yet we rise to the challenge of overriding our own or other people’s better judgment.”
