Playing Against the Virus (Studio 360)

POX: Save the People, a collaborative game designed by Dartmouth’s Mary Flanagan and the Tiltfactor Laboratory, is one of the games Studio 360 features in a segment about games that have a similar theme—controlling viruses and epidemics.

“These and other virus games have one thing in common: Players are forced to think strategically about how to deal with a situation that is escalating out of control, a skill known as systems thinking,” explains Studio 360 reporter Michael May.

“A lot of people think about systems thinking as a new 21st-century skill,” says Flanagan, the Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Professor in Digital Humanities and a professor of film and media studies. “It’s not that well understood how to teach that. When people are faced with complex situations, what are the steps by which they break down the problem and really try to understand the situation. This game actually takes people in that direction.”
