Dartmouth Murals Become National Historic Landmark (NHPR)

NHPR speaks with Dartmouth’s Mary Coffey, an associate professor of art history, about José Clemente Orozco’s murals at Baker-Berry Library. The murals, titled The Epic of American Civilization, have been designated a National Historic Landmark.

Coffey talks with NHPR about the murals, which depict the history of North America before and after the Spanish conquest. “Instead of treating the history of the American epic as one of gradual enlightenment, his story about the modern world is one about the traumas and the legacies of violence, of a modern world that’s born in violence,” she says.
