Steven Woloshin, co-director of the Center for Medicine and the Media at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice and a professor of medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine, offers advice to patients on what they should consider before making medical decisions about screenings and treatments.

It is important for patients to be aware of both the pros and the cons of any medical intervention, Woloshin says. He recommends asking, “What is this test supposed to do? What am I trying to avoid?”
