Fisher, professor of community and family medicine at Dartmouth Medical School, helped develop the accountable care organization (ACO) model in Vermont during the 1990s.
ACOs bring physicians and hospitals together to improve quality of care and reduce spending.
“It actually started in the small community of Randolph [Vermont], not more than 50 miles from the Dartmouth campus,” Fisher told Medscape Today News.
Fisher, who also serves as director of the Center for Population Health at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, also discussed the benefits and future of ACO programs.
