Debating Genetically Modified Salmon (NPR)

The biotech company AquaBounty has developed a genetically engineered salmon that grows twice as fast as normal fish. Are they safe for consumers and the environment? The Food and Drug Administration is trying to determine the answer.

Anne Kapuscinski, the Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Professor of Sustainability Science at Dartmouth, weighed in on the discussion with NPR’s Talk of the Nation.

She said that the current application to build a fish-farming facility in Panama “doesn’t really represent what’s coming down the road. It’s really more, you can think of it as sort of putting the camel’s nose under the tent.”

Kapuscinski called for a more rigorous assessment of the possible consequences of genetically modified salmon escaping and mixing with wild populations.
