Dartmouth Medical School Professor Harold Swartz and his team, supported by funding from the National Institutes of Health, are focused on using teeth and fingernails to measure radiation exposure. One machine they designed detects only high doses of radiation that could cause acute sickness, via a loop placed on the tooth. Another effort is aimed at using finger and toenail clippings to measure radiation exposure.
