An article published by Associate Professor of Geography Xun Shi has been named one of the 25 seminal papers published in the International Journal of Geographical Information Science (IJGIS). “Selection of Bandwidth Type and Adjustment Side in Kernel Density Estimation Over Inhomogeneous Backgrounds” was recently republished in the IJGIS’s special 25th anniversary virtual issue. The article was published in 2010.

“The article was an outcome from my research on disease mapping,” said Shi, who has been teaching at Dartmouth since 2002. “It provides a theoretical framework to sort out many methods under different names used in disease mapping and may facilitate a deeper understanding of their commonalities, differences, and applicability. It also brings attention to some potentially important methods that have been neglected.”
