Even with misinformation and disinformation in our lexicon, the risks of falling for a new scam have never been higher. From allegations of election fraud, to rumors of fake COVID cures, to concerns about viral stock market schemes, these threats swirl around us—on and offline.

But are these scams unique? Is fraud a distinctly American pastime? And are today's fraudsters different from the con men,  cheats, and swindlers of earlier ages?

Historian Ed Balleisen (Duke University) has published a book that gives us some answers: Fraud: An American History from Barnum to Madoff. Come listen to him talk about the history of fraud and what we've learned since the book came out in 2017.

Dartmouth faculty

Brooke Harrington (Sociology),

Stefan Link (History), and

Brendan Nyhan (Government) will join the conversation, moderated by

Elizabeth Lhost (History, Society of Fellows),

to weigh in on these developments and what they mean for the future of politics and economics.
