As educators, we know that what happens in the world outside our classrooms affects what happens inside them. Amid the ongoing pandemic, a divisive U.S. presidential election, and recent incidents of racial violence, 2020 has been no exception. These events, like others in recent history, are on the minds of faculty and students and have an effect on classroom dynamics, community well-being, and students’ ability to learn. How can we acknowledge the increased stress and heightened tension of these times and navigate them successfully with our students? How might we address difficult topics in our teaching in ways that are constructive? How might our disciplines provide context and build understanding for current events? In this session, we will discuss approaches and techniques for teaching in turbulent times, and hear from faculty who have done so in various disciplines.
