Integrating mechanical and materials engineering principles in the design, fabrication and characterization of biomedical related structures has healthcare applications that include cancer detection and vascular embolization. Hu will review a combined experimental and theoretical study of nanoparticle targeting and the use of cell mechanics in breast cancer detection. She will also introduce the biohybrid design of a tissue-derived nanocomposite for vascular embolization and discuss the implications of this work for the design of multifunctional biomedical related materials and devices.
