The metaphor of the "invisible hand' is one of the most famous, and controversial, in all of economics. The founder of political economy, Adam Smith, used the expression only three times in all of his writings, once in The Wealth of Nations. What exactly did he mean by it? How has it been interpreted or misinterpreted over time? What should we do with it today?
