In December 2018, the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra undertook a concert tour unlike any other in the ensemble's history. With the Orchestra Toscana dei Conservatori, whose players come from elite music academies throughout Italy's Tuscany region, the DSO spent 10 days performing concerts in Florence, Montepulciano, Lucca and Siena.

This broadcast comes from Siena's ornate, 18th-century Teatro dei Rinnovati, considered one of Tuscany's most important historical theaters. A sold-out audience heard the combined ensembles performed Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphony, one of the most musically demanding works in the orchestral repertoire. Said legendary conductor Herbert von Karajan, when you hear Mahler's Fifth, "you forget that time has passed. A great performance of the Fifth is a transforming experience." The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's Marin Alsop called it "a large-scale journey, guaranteed to provide surprises and new discoveries along the way."
