When a marriage ends, does it have to be a horror movie? Can it instead be one of the Best Pictures of the year? Noah Baumbach weaves his dark comedy with insight and compassion, following a New York playwright (Adam Driver) and actress (Scarlett Johansson) as they dissolve their once-happy union. Delivering moments of bewilderment, tenderness and loss, both leads earned Best Actor and Best Actress nods. Alan Alda, Ray Liotta and Laura Dern also provide terrific support, with Dern getting a Best Supporting Actress nomination as well. Hitting every note with the pure clarity of a bell, this precise observation of human behavior is funny, moving, and beautifully composed.
