Film: “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”
Quentin Tarantino’s fun, shambling love letter to 1960s movies and Hollywood delivers star turns from Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie.
Blending elements of the Western, fairy tale and buddy comedy, the auteur's ninth film is full of surprises, tongue-and-cheek humor and—of course—his trademark violence. Several storylines converge in this playful portrait of Hollywood at the end of its golden age, with the main thread following faded television actor Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) and his stunt double Cliff (Pitt) as they try to revamp their careers. Who knows? Maybe Rick's new neighbors, actress Sharon Tate (Robbie) and her husband Roman Polanski, can help.
Although Pitt and DiCaprio steal the show, the film boasts a stellar ensemble playing film industry caricatures (Al Pacino, Kurt Russell), movie icons like Steve McQueen (Damian Lewis) and Bruce Lee (Mike Moh), and an absolutely chilling flock of hippies (Dakota Fanning, Lena Dunham, Maya Hawke) calling themselves the Manson family… D: Quentin Tarantino, US, 2019
