Groundbreaking visual artist William Kentridge uses projections of his own charcoal drawings to invoke the war setting of this 20th-century masterwork.

Berg’s dark exploration of a soldier (Peter Mattei) besieged by the evils of society was composed during and in the aftermath of World War I, and the horrors of war come to terrifying life in the ramshackle warren of stairs, ramps, discarded furniture and debris of Kentridge’s new staging. His own theatrically animated charcoal sketches, along with other projected drawings, maps and film clips, evoke a nightmarish world of crashed planes, searchlights, ghostly gas masks and battlefields.

Elza van den Heever sings the long-suffering Marie, the mother of Wozzeck’s child, and in the roles of his tormentors are Christopher Ventris, Gerhard Siegel and Christian Van Horn (as the Doctor). Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts.
