Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo headlines Philip Glass’s transcendent contemporary creation set in a mystical ancient Egypt.

The much-anticipated Akhnaten promises to deliver the haunting impact that made its 1985 British premiere one of English National Opera’s most memorable nights. To match the opera’s hypnotic, ritualistic music, Phelim McDermott has created an arresting vision that captures the audience’s attention from the start. A virtuosic company of acrobats and jugglers and the shadows of Egyptian wall paintings come to life on Tom Pye’s multitiered set. Both the striking mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges, as the revolutionary pharaoh’s wife Nefertiti, and conductor Karen Kamensek at the podium make their Met debuts.

Due to the College’s exam schedule, only the live broadcast will be presented, but in Spaulding.
