What do we really know of how students’ writing changes over time and how they “see” writing? This session by Christiane Donahue will detail results from the first phase of a longitudinal study from a public liberal arts college. Student writing and student interviews were analyzed for change over 4 years in written production over time in two types of writing (analysis and researched writing) and for relationships between what students said about writing in interviews as compared to what they did in their writing. We will look at excerpts of the writing and the interviews of three students in three different majors. What changed over time? How does change in their writing align, or not, with what they say about writing? What might this mean for our understanding of students’ long-term growth? The session will conclude with discussion of implications for developing our students’ rhetorical flexibility in our first-year classes.
