There are at least two ways to look at heroes. You can stand back and gaze upwards, or you can draw closer and see feats of courage through their eyes.

The Academy Award–winning team of director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling (La La Land) reunites for this astonishing biopic of Neil Armstrong, which throws us immediately into the cockpit as he and his fellow test pilots hurtle beyond the stratosphere in shaky metal prototypes that can barely take the strain. At home, Armstrong maintains the taciturn logic that keeps him alive as a pilot, but it tears at his relationship with his wife Janet (Claire Foy) and their sons.

Downplaying the grandiose spectacle typically assigned to this story, Chazelle instead focuses on how the journey into outer space became a constant confrontation with failure, frustration and even death. His confident, disciplined storytelling takes us to a place Stanley Kubrick, Philip Kaufman, Christopher Nolan and Ridley Scott have gone before, but in an entirely new way: as a minimalist epic.

D: Damien Chazelle, US, 2018, 2h20m
