With equal parts glitz and grit, Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut successfully navigates the perilous shoals of making a classic narrative his own. With the help of Lady Gaga’s impressive acting debut and powerhouse singing, he manages to create one of its best iterations to date.

And after undergoing extensive vocal preparation for the role, Cooper rocks the role of seasoned musician Jackson Maine, who discovers and falls for struggling artist Ally (Lady Gaga). Touring together, both Jack and Ally see their music and romance reach new heights, until Ally’s solo career takes off and Jack’s internal demons take center stage. This jaggedly tender love story takes us on a journey through the beauty and challenges of a relationship refracted through the cruel mirror of showbiz. These two people, the rising star and the fading star, are locked in a love as true as it is torn, and by the end of the movie they’ve both become us. A Star Is Born is a reminder of the scrappy grand passion that movies are all about.
