Description: Lymphoma incidence in sub-Saharan Africa is increasing due to epidemic levels of HIV infection, population growth, and aging. However, limitations in diagnostic pathology services are major obstacles to establishing cancer treatment programs in the region. We will discuss the development of a diagnostic pathology laboratory in Malawi, and the growth of both clinical and research programs that aim to improve outcomes for patients with Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma worldwide.

Bio: Yuri Fedoriw, MD is an Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Director of Hematopathology at the University of North Carolina. His research focuses on the biology of lymphoproliferative disorders in the setting of HIV infection, and he serves as a primary US collaborator supporting diagnostic and research activities for the Kamuzu Central Hospital Lymphoma Study. He is a member of the CAP Hematology and Clinical Microscopy Committee and a member of the USCAP Education Committee.
