Professor Celso Thomas Castilho’s research focuses on Latin America and the Atlantic world, with an emphasis on the histories of slavery and emancipation, print culture and the public sphere, and the African diaspora. Dr. Castilho's first award-winning book, Slave Emancipation and Transformations in Brazilian Political Citizenship (Pittsburgh, 2016), takes a political and cultural approach to the process of abolition, and establishes the enslaved’s wide-ranging initiatives for freedom as constitutive of broader shifts in political practice.
