Taking as its point of departure the rituals of memorialization that surround the 50th anniversary of 1968, this paper asks whether one can imagine a thought of 1968 in Mexico that is not thoroughly conditioned by the demand of the archive and by the drive to commemorate. Arguing that the post-68 tradition has largely had the effect of working toward a vague notion of justice inflected by the discourse of human rights, which has in turn, been conscripted to the cause of Mexico’s ‘democratic transition,” I will suggest a critical suspension of those restitutive drives in favor of a speculative relation to the legacy of 1968.
