Historian Annelise Orleck and photographer Liz Cooke will present photos from:"We Are All Fast-Food Workers Now": The Global Uprising Against Poverty Wages , Prof. Orleck’s latest publication. (Cover photo by Liz Cooke)

The presentation starts at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018, in the Nearburg Gallery, Black Family Visual Arts Center. The exhibition will be on display Oct. 9— Oct. 30, 2018.

Pastries and coffee from Lou's Bakery will be provided.

In 2015, historian Annelise Orleck and photographer Liz Cooke traveled the world interviewing and photographing low-wage workers and activists. The resulting book, We Are All Fast Food Workers Now, chronicles this journey and tells the story of global resistance from the point of view of the workers themselves - hotel housekeepers, homehealth aides, fast food workers, garment workers and berry pickers.

Through her photographs, Liz brings to life the resilience and sacrifice of these workers, revealing their struggles and strength, their courage and humanity. By focusing on ordinary people doing extraordinary things, Liz hopes to inspire others to engage in a conversation about consumerism, exploitation and oppression. Almost everyone in this collection was photographed up close and there is little, if any, retouching or manipulation. By eschewing the “tricks of the trade,” Liz brings an essential honesty to her work and shows connection with and reverence for the individual.

This event is sponsored by the Leslie Center for the Humanities.
