Sergio Corbucci’s hard-R wintry shoot-’em-up may be the most influential Spaghetti Western you’ve never seen—fans of Tarantino’s Hateful Eight, take note! On an unforgiving, snow-swept frontier, a group of bloodthirsty bounty hunters, led by the vicious Loco (Klaus Kinski, Fitzcarraldo) prey on a band of persecuted outlaws who have taken to the hills. A mute gunslinger named Silence may be their only hope—but in this harsh, brutal world, the lines between right and wrong aren’t always clear, and good doesn’t always triumph.

Featuring superb photography and a haunting score from maestro Ennio Morricone, this digitally restored masterwork celebrates its 50th with a long overdue US theatrical release. D: Sergio Corbucci, Italy, subtitled, 1968, 1h45m

Programmed in conjunction with the Dartmouth Department of Film & Media Studies class on “The Western”
