Daniel Aridgides, MD

Senior Medical Resident

Internal Medicine

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center

Title: "Cigarette Smoke Disrupts Alveolar Macrophage Function – Implications for COPD Pathogenesis and Treatment"

Learning Objectives:

Understand the effects of smoking on macrophage function in the lung with specific attention to functional and metabolic parameters
Determine the role of cystic fibrosis transmembrane receptor in the pathophysiology of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Consider the role of these pathways in the application and development of novel therapeutics for COPD

Edison Tsui, MD

Senior Medical Resident

Internal Medicine

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center

Title: “The Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia order-set (HITOS)
Improving the Diagnosis and Management of HIT:  A single-center experience”

Learning Objectives:

Understand how heparin-Induced thrombocytopenia with thrombosis can result in significant morbidity and mortality
Understand the role of early recognition and management to prevent complications and death.
Determine how an integrated order-set with medical decision aid incorporating the pre-test likelihood can be helpful in both diagnosis and management early on when HIT is suspected

8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.

About our presenters:

Dr. Aridgides grew up outside of Syracuse, NY and later attended Cornell University where he majored in Biological and Environmental Engineering where he started doing bench research as an undergrad.  He attended medical school at Tufts University in Boston, and earned a PhD investigating growth factor signaling induced by Trypanosoma cruzi in the mammalian heart.  He entered the Internal Medicine residency program at DHMC and elected to continue doing basic research in addition to clinical work, entering the research pathway into Pulmonary/Critical Care Fellowship.  He continues to work on host-pathogen interactions in the lab of Dr. Alix Ashare, studying the interplay between lung macrophages and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as the effects of cigarette smoke in this system.  He lives in Windsor, VT with his wife, twin daughters, and his dog.

Dr. Tsui was born and raised in Seattle, WA. He attended the University of Washington for college where he majored in applied chemistry, biochemistry, and music. He received his MD from Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, where he met his wife. This summer, he will be a hospitalist at Columbia University Medical Center.
