Sphinx Virtuosi is the crown jewel of a transformative Detroit-based program intent on broadening classical music. The members of this chamber orchestra got their start with the internationally renowned Sphinx Competition for young black and Latino classical musicians who now play with America’s major classical ensembles. Music Without Borders features composers promoting unity amidst hardship and conflict, including Dmitri Shostakovich, Spaniard Gaspar Cassadó, Emmy-nominated Syrian-American composer Kareem Roustom, and, in a newly commissioned work, Grammy-winning jazz trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard.
