Russian filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev (Leviathan) proves to be the pre-eminent chronicler of his country’s 21st-century malaise with this razor-sharp drama about a family—and society—on the precipice of collapse.

This searing Oscar nominee centers on a materialistic, professional couple in the throes of a vicious divorce. Impatient to start over with new partners, they care more about the sale of their fancy apartment than the fate of their 12-year-old son. But when he doesn’t return home one night, the ambivalent and resource-strained authorities provide no help. The warring parents must mount their own independent search, one that forces them to confront their fears, past actions and apathy.

D: Andrei Zvyagintsev, Russia, 2017, subtitled, Runtime: 2h07m
