Film: "Land and Legacy of an Art Colony"
A short documentary about the Cornish Art Colony, which formed around the work of Augustus Saint-Gaudens during the Gilded Age. Discussion and reception follow.
The documentary film Land and Legacy of an Art Colony tells the story of America's cultural and environmental leaders who gathered around Augustus Saint-Gaudens during the Gilded Age to form the distinguished Cornish Colony. They are some of America's earliest conservationists, landscape architects, and musicians whose legacy includes the Appalachian Trail, America's National Park System, Audubon bird sanctuaries, and public gardens. Through photography, painting, poetry, dance, and music, the film paints an appealing portrait of the creative people who were inspired by a landscape dominated by Mount Ascutney and the Connecticut River. The film is a journey of discovery led by the prominent actor Jonathan Farwell, a Colony descendant.
After the film (approx 26m), join producers Fern Meyers and Nora Jacobson as they discuss the development and history of their documentary. A reception will follow in the lobby.
Free and open to the public. Programmed in conjunction with the OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute at Dartmouth.
