Abstract: The lack of new physics at the weak scale suggests that it may be decoupled at higher energies. The Standard Model (SM) is therefore an Effective Field Theory (EFT) below this energy cut-off, and contains operators of higher mass dimension than the usual renormalisable terms. Since these operators encapsulate and classify systematically the possible effects of decoupled new physics, the SM EFT is an appropriate framework for doing phenomenology in the post-Higgs-discovery era. In this talk I will introduce the SM EFT and the current and future indirect sensitivity to the scale of new physics of various experimental measurements. I will also discuss the implications of decoupled new physics for the hierarchy problem that may point towards an interesting interplay of the Higgs sector with cosmological dynamics in the early universe.
