Darkness rises … and light to meet it. The Last Jedi, written and directed by Rian Johnson (Looper), picks up where The Force Awakens left off—and the rebels have no time to rest on their laurels. Our heroes must now separate to defeat the restored First Order. Rey (Daisy Ridley) attempts to coax a reclusive Luke (Mark Hamill) back into the fight … or to at least train her properly. Finn (John Boyega) searches for a “master codebreaker” on a surreal distant planet. The ever-impulsive Poe (Oscar Isaac) clashes over tactics with General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher, in her final film role) and her hardline deputy (Laura Dern). All the while, Darth Vader’s heir apparent Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) is travelling a tortured journey of his own. D: Rian Johnson, US, 2017, Runtime: 2h32m

“It’s a lot of movie, in a good way. Johnson has whipped up 152 minutes’ worth of pursuit, evasion, mayhem, team-building, explosions, nostalgia and, yes, wit (spoiler alert: actual wit).” —Chicago Tribune
