Anne Merrild Hansen, PhD, Ilisimatusarfik (University of Greenland), and The Danish Centre for Environmental Assessment, Aalborg University, Denmark, will introduce the history of oil in the Arctic and talk about the social impacts known to be related to large scale industrial development. She will describe the social impact of assessment systems in place in Arctic countries and related benefits agreements systems. Drawing on some of her case studies, she will discuss the situation in Greenland and on the North Slope of Alaska today and the social impacts experienced there, and the premises for wise management when new projects are implemented and managed.
