Title: "Understanding Plasma Turbulence in Velocity Space"
Abstract: Plasma turbulence is widely observed in nearly collisionless space plasmas such as the Earth’s and planetary magnetospheres, the solar wind and the intersteallar medium. A fundamental process governing the flow of energy from large fluid scales to small kinetic scales, turbulence plays a significant role in the evolution of the system. The kinetic mechanisms leading to the dissipation of the turbulence at small scales remain to be better understood. Recent advances in high phase-space resolution in spacecraft measurements and nonlinear kinetic simulations have the capability to explore the full information contained in the particle velocity distributions. This can provide new insights into the energy transfer mechanisms between turbulence and plasma particles. In this talk, recent progress through numerical simulations and innovative techniques using the particle velocity space in understanding the nature of turbulent energy transfer will be discussed.
