Winner of six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, this historical contest of wills has just been digitally restored.

Adapted by Robert Bolt from his hit stage play, the story centers on the staunchly Catholic Sir Thomas More's (Paul Scofield) refusal to acknowledge King Henry VIII’s (Robert Shaw) break from the church to divorce his first wife and marry Anne Boleyn (Vanessa Redgrave). Keep an eye out for other cameos: John Hurt as the deceitful Richard Rich (More's put-downs of this despicable character provide some of the film's biggest laughs) and Orson Welles as a delightfully dour Cardinal Wolsey.

Come for the political intrigue, stay for the verbal courtroom fireworks.

D: Fred Zinneman, US, 1966, 2h
