In space, no one can hear you scream.

Blending the minimalist elegance of Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey into the creature-feature, Ridley Scott transformed the sci-fi genre with his 1979 landmark film, Alien.

After handing off some of the sequels (most notably to James Cameron for Aliens), Ridley Scott has returned to direct a prequel series—beginning with the surprisingly philosophical Prometheus, but now returning to form with this next chilling installment which evokes feminist themes and taps into our greatest fears. The crew (Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Katherine Waterston) of a colony ship is charged with finding a new home for its 2000 passengers and 1000 embryos, and for humanity itself, but damages to their ship prompt them to land on an uncharted planet. Though the only being they come across is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), the planet seems compatible with human life, practically a paradise…except for some pests with acid for blood.

To describe the twists and turns that follow would spoil the film, but this latest in the series is so thrilling that it “makes you want to see the next installment tomorrow” (Hollywood Reporter ). D: Ridley Scott, US, 2017, 2h
