Learning Objectives:

1. Discuss the basic epidimiology of knee osteoarthritis

2. Explain the importance of the placebo effect when choosing therapies for knee osteoarthritis

3. Review data supporting the use of the most common injectable therapies for knee osteoarthritis.

Dr. Lisa A. Mandl is an Assistant Research Professor of Medicine and Assistant Research Professor of Healthcare Policy at Weill Cornell Medicine.  She received an undergraduate degree from Williams College, a medical degree from the University of British Columbia, and a Master's degree in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health.  She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of British Columbia, and fellowship in Rheumatology at The Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School.  Her research centers on inflammatory arthritis and osteoarthritis, including predictors of outcomes after total joint replacement.  She has been funded by the NIH, AHRQ and various foundations. She is currently an Associate Editor at Annals of Internal Medicine, as well as an author at “Up-to-Date”. Dr. Mandl currently works as a clinical investigator and attending rheumatologist at Hospital for Special Surgery/Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City, where she is actively involved in both patient care and teaching, with a clinical focus on seronegative inflammatory arthritis.
