Academy Award Nomination for Best Original Screenplay

With 20th Century Women, acclaimed filmmaker Mike Mills (Beginners) delivers a richly multilayered, funny, heart-stirring celebration of the complexities of women, family, time, and the connections we search for our whole lives.

It’s 1979, and everything is in flux. Ayatollah Khomeini assumes power in Iran; Margaret Thatcher becomes the British Prime Minister; and, in Santa Barbara, Dorothea Fields (Annette Bening), a determined single mother in her mid-50s is raising her adolescent son. It is a time of rebellion and constant change, so Dorothea enlists the help of a free-spirited punk artist (Greta Gerwig) and a savvy teenage neighbor (Elle Fanning). The three women form a makeshift family, making connections that will mystify and inspire them throughout their entire lives. D: Mike Mills, US, 2016, 119m
