Dr. Swensen earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin, then completed a residency in radiology at the Mayo Clinic and a fellowship in thoracic radiology at Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He earned a Masters of Medical Management from Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz School and is a trained Executive Coach. He is dedicated to the development of thoughtful leaders who have the capability to nurture camaraderie and joy in work. He serves as the Mayo Clinic Director for Leadership and Organization Development, Professor in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Senior Fellow of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.

Under his leadership as Director for Quality and Associate Dean for Value, the Mayo Clinic Quality Academy and the Value Creation System were established. More than 37,000 colleagues have been certified as Bronze, Silver or Gold Quality Fellows through this program. He was awarded the Mayo Clinic Diamond Quality Lifetime Achievement Award. While Chair of the Department of Radiology, his leadership team used Lean-Sigma and Baldrige to improve the value of care for patients provided by 1,200 staff who performed more than one million exams annually. During his tenure the department was recognized as the Number 1 Radiology Practice in the USA (Medical Imaging) and the most Patient-Centered (Diagnostic Imaging). Swensen currently serves as the Director of the Board of Leadership and Organizational Development and is a member of the Mayo Clinic Management Team and Clinical Practice Committee. He previously served as the Director for Quality and Safety at the Mayo Clinic.

During the two past decades, Swensen has started three businesses. He served as President of two international groups, the Fleischner Society and the Society of Thoracic Radiology. He teaches Value Creation at University of Minnesota School of Public Health, and founded the Big Sky Quality Roundtable and the Sun Valley Quality Assembly. He has been Principal Investigator of two NIH Grants and has authored two books and 167 peer-reviewed articles. Swensen has been married for 39 years, has two children and has run or cross-country skied 39 marathons.
