A gripping study in courage, this Sundance Audience Award-winning doc follows the determined and animated Sonita, an Afghan living in Tehran who dreams of being a famous rapper. But in Iran, solo singing is forbidden to women, and her family has plans of their own: as a bride she’s worth $9,000. Armed with nothing but passion and persistence, Sonita turns obstacle into opportunity, taking the world by storm with a fiery rap video arguing against forced marriage.

Will this shocking act of artistic expression enrage her family and hasten her marriage, or be her ticket to freedom? Director Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami ends up personally involved in answering that question, reigniting the discussion as to how documentary makers should relate to their subjects. D: Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami, Germany/Iran, subtitled, 2015, 90m
