Mira Nair’s true-life inspirational tale “is hardly the first to use a chessboard as a symbol of one life's struggles. It is, however, one of the best” (Chicago Sun). Living in the Katwe slum of Kampala, Uganda is a constant struggle for 10-year-old Phiona (Madina Nalwanga), but her world changes the day she discovers an innate talent for chess. Phiona becomes fascinated with the game, and with the help of a coach (David Oyelowo) and her mother (Lupita Nyong’o), finds courage to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion, a golden chance to escape from a life of poverty. D: Mira Nair, US, 2016, 124m
