Dr. Silverstein’s concerns about the quality of U.S. science education led him to found Columbia University’s Summer Research Program for Science Teachers in 1990. The Program engages science teachers in hands-on laboratory research under the mentorship of Columbia University faculty in all disciplines of science for 8 weeks in each of two consecutive summers, and in weekly professional development exercises aligned to New York State’s science curriculum during these periods. Three hundred and fifteen science teachers and their more than 270,000 students have benefited from this program since its inception. The Program’s significant educational, human, and economic benefits are described in “Teachers’ Participation in Research Programs Improves Their Students’ Achievement in Science,” Science magazine (326:440-442, 2009). Dr. Silverstein’s work in science education has been recognized by the New York City Mayor’s Award for Public Understanding of Science and Technology (2003) the American Society for Cell Biology’s Bruce Alberts Award for Excellence in Science Education (2005), and by the Program’s replication by Questar III BOCES (http://www.questar.org/StaffDevelopment/summerscience.php), in Albany, New York.

In addition to his work in science education, Dr. Silverstein is internationally recognized for his discoveries in innate and acquired immunity, and in host defense vs. infectious agents. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, has been elected to membership in the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the American Association of Physicians, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Medicine, and is an Honorary Member of Dartmouth’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.
