Barbara Newton is a collagist and painter. Barbara studied art at Shorter College in Georgia and Teachers College Columbia University in New York.  She taught art as a profession in New York State.  Her work can be seen at her studio in Lyme, NH and at Long River Studios, also in Lyme.

In her collages she seeks to portray the grace and beauty of the landscape, woods and waterways of rural New England where she lives and works.  Her motivation comes from exploring and discovering compositions in nature that are visually striking because of color, shape or texture.  These discoveries are distilled and reordered into compositions that reflect the environment.  There is a creative interval between representation and abstraction in many of the compositions.  The materials involved in her collages are all paper.  Many of the papers are handmade in Japan or other countries as well as this country. The papers are often highly textured.  Barbara’s collages and paintings are in private and corporate collections in New England and other parts of the country.

Barbara Newton’s collages will be exhibited at the Osher office located on 7 Lebanon Street, Suite 107 in Hanover, NH during office hours between August 2 – September 28.
